Killington Snow Report Tuesday February 29 *Forecasters calling for 10-14″ by Thurs Night* Demo Day on Sunday too

Freeriding, Killington, Skiing, Snow Report, Snowboarding, Uncategorized No Comments

Vertigo Headwall lies and waits for tomorrow..

Snow showers with periods of light to moderate snow, 28*, light wind.

Looks like Round 2 is upon us. It WAS supposed to start sometime after 5 tonight, but it’s been snowing and some rate or another since around 9am. Always a good sign. There’s maybe an inch or two down now.

My plan today, as is with any day before a big day, is to do a little surveillance of where the best lines/terrain will be for the next morning. Well, that didn’t quite work out. It was still decent skiing and I traveled around the mountain some and everything skied well. Skied some groomers on Superstar, Bittersweet and Skyeburst. Really nice great bumps on lower Vertigo, even some pow under the Skyeship on Needles and on upper Vertigo below the Headwall. Best snow I found was when I ventured out to Lower Pipe dream which lots of loose snow on it and it was only getting fresher.

As for the impending storm, the National Weather Service – Burlington is calling for 10-14″ between now and Thursday night. Storm riding on Thursday clearer skies for Friday. I’m ready!

Sorry about today’s pics. Low light and snowy conditions made for tough definitions.

Also, I would like to remind or let everyone know about our Season Tune customer appreciation Demo Day at the Preferred Lot above Bay 1 on  Sunday March 4 from 8:15-12:30

We’ll be demoing ALL of next years skis

Killington Snow Report Tuesday February 28

Freeriding, Killington, Skiing, Snow Report, Snowboarding, Uncategorized No Comments

Sure was nice out today. Taken from Racers Edge and Royal Flush

Complete bluebird, 28* and light wind @ 11:45

Wow! What a day! It’s almost a completely ski resort from what I last skied on Thursday. A quick snow squall moved through this morning leaving Killington with a quick inch of so to freshen things up.  I headed up Superstar  first run to check things out. Ovation skied well. Pow dumps on the left and fresh more center. Lower SS had some ice floes in the ungroomed areas of skiers right, but other than that it skied well. That was good and all, but I knew that there was better stuff to find up in the Canyon and easy access with the CQ4 spinning.

Up the K1 to Big Dipper which skied very well. Lots of loose and fresh snow up there. I love the Canyon area. My favorite spot on the mountain. Skied Big Dipper a few times. Watch out for below tower 5, in Big Dipper. Snow was quite glacial in that section, besides that it was fine with great coverage. Met up with some friends and we spun a Cascade. I think it was the best conditions that I have skied Cascade this year. Nice and carvy. After that we did a Rime Run (West Glade) to Royal Flush. First Royal Flush of the season for me. Lots of soft snow and decent coverage on it too. I love Royal Flush.; such an old school Killington run.

Two more Big Dippers, then another Rim Run to a freshly excavated Conclusion, where the freestyle course was, which skied great and that was my ski day

In other Killington Snow News, forecasters are calling for 8-10″ of new snow by Thursday morning.  Hope everyone gets a change to get up here and sample it. There is enough base down on most all terrain. 8-10″ new will make the skiing fantastic

Killington Snow Report Monday February 27

Uncategorized No Comments

Sunny to overcast and snowy, 30*

Well, Monday’s are my busiest day of the week here; resulting in no skiing for me. No biggie. I could use the rest.

The people that I did speak to said the snow was great! Kind of styrofoam like and grippy. Two good qualities in natural snow. Double Dipper and Big Dipper are legally open and filled in nicely I’m told. Woods are skiing well, but getting tracked. Looks like there is more snow in the forecast now.

Finally. Winter is finally here. Come up and get some midweek turns.

Sorry for the lame report today. I’ll be out there tomorrow with my personal take on it with pics. Thanks for reading!

Bolton Valley Snow Report Sunday February 26 Big Pow day with 26″ fresh

Back Country Skiing, Freeriding, Killington, Skiing, Snow Report, Snowboarding, Uncategorized No Comments

The kind of day that really only happens in your dreams (In my case usually between July and Nov). 24* Light wind, complete bluebird and 26″ down that hasn’t been touched since Friday afternoon.

Starting Saturday afternoon, my buddy Chris, a part time Bolton Employee writes on his facebook wall that since Friday, the mountain has been on wind hold AND it’s still snowing. Dumping actually. Big flakes just piling up deep. I wished him a good day on Sunday and have fun getting after it as Sandy and I ski Pico, trade parental duties with skiing on Sundays. At about the same time as this Sandy who is skiing Pico is texting me and sending me pics of the Summit Chair derailment. Fortunately for her, she wasn’t on the chair at the time of the derailment. She skis whatever she can at Pico before heading home. Once home, she informs me that she has other things on her agenda for Sunday. Could it possibly be that I’m in the clear for Sunday? A “hall pass” to go shred nasties with Chris? Yes, yes it was. To sweeten Chris’ inticement, he trows in that he can get me a $40 lift ticket and now it’s snowing even harder.  I fgure I get up at 6 and head up to be there by 8. Sunday morning I get the idea that it might be better travels, even if further miles to head up Rte 7 then down 89 rather than going up through the interior green mountains where all the snow is. My plan seemed to work as there wasn’t anymore than a couple inches of snow on the roads until I got off at Exit 11.

I get there at about 8:45, simply because I missed the access road and went down Rte 2 to Waterbury before having to back treck to find it and it’s a beautiful sight. A ton of fresh, bluebird and no wind. I meet up with Chris and we get set for my first run, his third as he’s been here waiting for the lifts to spin. It was like nirvana. Deep, untracked snow mid-thigh deep every turn. It wasn’t as deep that it was just bellowing in front of you and your constantly in the white room, that seems to happen at about 36″, but nonetheless this was special. After that run we meet up with another of Chris’ friends Devin. We then proceede to shred it up from 9:30-2 without a break.

We rode mostly woods, but the trails were great too. Most of the trails had a groomer swath or two going down them, the rest ungroomed. The woods at Bolton were excellent. Not marked woods by any means, but definately not tight and spaced far enough to ensure sheer bliss. Kind of reminded me of the woods sections between Low Road and Vertigo, but more like a Patsy’s or Low Rider pitch.

Bolton Valley skis big for a place that is 1600′vertical and about 300 acres. There’s a lot of terrain in that 300 acres. There’s three peaks. The highest Wilderness, then the main peak of Vista and the lower peak of Timberline. Timberline is more of less their expert terrain. No high speed quads here. the peak chairs are two fixed grip quads and an old Hall double chair at Wilderness. They boast the highest base elevation of any ski area in VT. This helps them have and hold natural snow quite well. Although well maintained, you’ll believe it once you drive up their access road.

Sorry, I dont have any pics of the days adventures. We were busy shredding all day and since I never skied their woods, Chris and Devin would drop in first so I could see where I was headed. I did manage to make the Bolton Valley facebok page though. Here’s a look at their pics from  2.26.12 Two Feet of Fresh Snow

Great place, Great time, Great people and a lot of familair old faces. Check it out for a day if you want to get away from Killington or if you have an itch for night skiing/riding

Pico Snow Report Friday February 24

Sandy shredding it up on upper KA

Light sleet and snow, 32* and windy and posting this from the Last Run Pub third floor of the Pico Base Lodge.

This is going to be a short report as we just ordered lunch and I dont want to be rude to our guests.

I took the day off today to ski with family that came up from Greene County, NY. We got here about 10 and our guests were ready to roll. The mountain is in great shape with the same terrain as the past week. On the upper mountain, 49er and KA were the standard groomers and Pike and Sunset 71 were left ungroomed. UGK is open, but we didnt venture there. The groomers are skiing well and the ungroomed is holding up okay. There’s pockets of fresh to be had on Pike, and Birth Glade. Sunset was more moguly, but still lots of fun. As usual the lower mountain  is skiing well.

So by know, most of you know there’s a storm brewing for later today, tonight and tomorrow. It seems that this storm is taking it’s time to get here and accumulations have been scalled back, but the National Weather Service is still calling for 2-4″ today, 7-11″ tonight and 1-3″ tomorrow at 3,559′. So with some luck, we’ll be upwards of 18″ towards K Peak when it’s all said and done.

This laptop battery is getting low and lunch came a few mins ago. Have fun out ther etomorrow y’all!
