Killington Snow Report Friday April 12

Freeriding, Killington, Skiing, Snow Report, Snowboarding, Uncategorized No Comments

Today was kind of a weather hiccup. Lets say it could of been a whole lot worse. We saw maybe a couple inches of snow then a bunch of sleet then the dreaded freezing rain.

All of this was a net gain, there was no liquid precipitation from the sky today. All frozen precip. This fares well down the road as it basically encased the mountain in ice, just waiting for a thaw for the off piste and a snow cat for a groomer.

This weekend is still looking decent weather wise. Expect a wintery day tomorrow with spits of snow and overcast skies with temps in the mid-30′s Sunday looks to be the better of the two days this weekend with the sun scheduled to make an appearance.

Don’t forget that Saturday is season pass holder appreciation day with a free BBQ lunch, live music and the VT brewmaster series as well as lifts spinning until 5. In addition to all this, we’ll have a tent set up on Saturday offering free demos to season pass holders. We will also have our 2013 demo fleet available for sale. Please stop by and say hello tomorrow.

Have a great weekend, y’all!

Some great looking moguls on Vertigo below the Snowshed crossover

Bluebird, no wind and 42* at 2:30 in Bay 2

What a day today was! It was a bit warmer than yesterday and no wind really helped in softening the snow. I thought the trees off bear woods skied best as that snow that fell on Monday then froze started to soften and corn today making for some great skiing. Unfortunately, I was late to that party as I skied it twice before it was starting to reset.

No matter, other notables were Vertigo where those mogul lines started to soften up too making for some of the best moguls I have skied this season. I finished the day out by alternating between skiing the smooth corn on Bittersweet/Low Road and bumps on Vertigo off the NE4.

I’m off to ski the big mountains of the Wasatch range in Utah tomorrow. Others around here will be filling in for me while I’m gone. Enjoy this spring weather and the weekend!

Looking down Lower East fall with Cascade and Lower Dipper in the background

Brilliantly sunny, stiff winds and a cool for early April, 28* at 2:30pm in Bay 1

So, upon leaving the shop, I run into Lisa who is just getting off the hill and she tells me that Superstar is skiing best as the wind has really buffed out a lot of the mountain. In honesty, I’m not really dying to ski a bunch of Superstar’s as there will be plenty of that after April 21.

I get there and I figure I would do a small tour around the mountain. I head up the K1 in hopes of some wintery snow and ski upper and lower East Fall, which was good. Up the CQ4 to ski natural snow bumps on whatever the trail that used to be called West Glade. Sorry, I forget the name of it. Which was really, good. Growing tired of taking the slow CQ4 as it was stopping frequently, I head to Bear via K Peak.

Bear was just alright by that point of the day. It had started to soften earlier, but now was resetting as the sun was off it. Up the Skye Peak chair to a Bittersweet, which was okay. The lower part had a ball bearing type surface. I finished things up with a run down Superstar which had the best snow.

I guess I should of listened to Lisa and stuck to the good snow on Superstar..

Looking at Royal Flush and Highline from the top of Ovation headwall

A typical early April Vermont day. Snow squalls to mostly sunny back to overcast, quite windy and cold for April 2 with 24* at 11am in Bay 1

What an interesting day. Conditions varied depending upon where you went on the mountain. The higher up you were, the better the skiing was. This was from yesterdays weird weather event where it snowed a heavy, wet snow that fell on a soft base from Sundays warm temps, then it rained for a very brief time, then it snowed hard for a couple hrs after that. Again, you have to love early April in Vermont.

There were some powder pockets to be found today, especially up higher on the mountain. There was also plenty of crusty snow to be found throughout too.

Anyway, the higher up you were yesterday, the shorted the rain duration was. So today that snow was groomed up nice and skied like mid-winter snow. Below that was wetter snow that froze up and skied like frozen granular/ice. I’m sure tomorrow will be better once the whole mountain gets a thorough grooming now that it’s cold.

Closing day at Pico Sunday March 31

Freeriding, Killington, Skiing, Snow Report, Snowboarding, Uncategorized No Comments

Last list served run down Pike at 4:10

Hope you all had a pleasant Easter.

Mostly cloudy, no wind and 53* at 2pm

Today was Pico’s closing day for the 2012-2013 season and what a day it was! I made it a point to ski a run off every chair (except Bonanza) as I wanted to get one last bang for my buck.

It’s a shame that they are closing as every trail, even the low elevation natural snow trails have 100% tree-to-tree coverage, but I understand. This isn’t a big surprise. They said last year that they were closing on March 31 and now it’s closing day. I mean what more can one expect for a $349 pass?

I also think that Pico did a fantastic job in mountain operations this year. Sure, mother nature helped, but they made more snow this year than they have in recent years. Now that Pico is closed for lift served, let the skinning and hiking begin! I always manage to grab one day of uphill skiing before it melts out and with the amount of snow that is caked on that mountainside now, that wont be for a long time.

Low elevation and natural snow trail, Bronco, still has tree-to-tree coverage.

A late season hike favorite, B - Slope.

Still plenty of snow on more low elevation natural snow trails like A - Slope

Good moguls on Upper Pike to close out the lift served season.

Caught the last chair up the Outpost for the season at 3pm!

Natural snow trail, Birch Glade still has tree-to-tree coverage too.
