Pete carving Skye Lark

Today skiing had a purpose, I didn’t expect to be going skiing but it was a great way to blow off some steam and get some much needed skiing footage for our new Basin commercials that you will see on Outside TV very soon.  I went up and the Basin group kept getting bigger and bigger which was great, I couldn’t have planned it any better.  Kevin, Pete, Clarke myself and Amy all represented the Basin well, plenty of color in all the new clothing and a good mix of snowboards and skiers.  Most of the footage was shot in the Glades and on High Line, some of the terrain was thin in spots and you needed quick feet if you weren’t paying attention to avoid some obstacles.  Thank god Pete had his brand new foamed Nordica boots on because I fell directly in front of him and instead of running me over he nimbly switched directions and finished the shot, my fall wont be in the commercial.  Once the work was over we went directly to the Superstar chair, the skiing over there was fantastic.  The snow guns had blown really nice snow on Superstar and skiers right was nice velvety snow with some small whales, Pete described it as Velveeta Cheese like, there you go Pete.  The skiing under the Glades Triple was good but the snow over on Superstar was so much better and it was a nice change of scenery, the weird part was all the crowds were in the Galdes.  I was going to take a picture of the umbrella bars but I forgot, they look really cool, instead I got a couple good shots of Pete and Kev both representing and throwing some great turns on their Line Prophet’s.

Kevin on chute

Today was one of those days I was on the fence about going out on the hill but staring a long 11 hour day in the face I chose to go out for a few runs.  I met Kevin in the parking lot so there was a bonus right off the bat, didn’t have to ski alone.  We took the K1 up first and it was really socked in with fog, heading down to the Rime triple my goggles started to mist up so I just took them off which really helped with my vision since the thick fog reduced our speeds considerably.  The snow was really soft and easy to ski as it is on most warm wet days, it did get thin around the bottom of the Poma directly under the Snowdon quad but with colder temps coming tonight and the potential for snow in higher elevations that should be taken care of by tomorrow.  One run to the bottom of the Snowdon Quad was enough so we stayed up in the glades area where the fog was slightly thinner.  Kevin and I traded skis, he took my Rossignol Experience 88′s and I took a ride on his Salomon Enduro’s, both awesome skis for the conditions we were skiing.  We met up with Charlie for our last run, you can barley make him out in the photo I took of him, trust me it’s him.  I also took a photo of a new structure they are building behind the umbrella bars, it looks like there is going to be some sort of deck or something on top.  Anyone know what that building is going to be?

There’s not a lot of terrain open but what is open is very skiable.  Killington did a magnificent job of recovering from the melt down early last week.  A big thanks goes out to all you snowmakers.  If you skied in the big crowds on Saturday and didn’t ski Sunday don’t worry you weren’t alone.  The crowd was substantially smaller.  The terrain open is Rime, Reason and Upper East Fall in the North Ridge area and on Snowdon you can ski Mouse Run, Bunny Buster, Mouse Trap (which was developing some good bumps) and mid point down on Chute.  All the trails (I skied) were covered with a very nice snow surface.  Rams Head is also open but I didn’t check it out.  Looking forward to a great ski day on Monday morning.  Lorraine

Just got off the hill and it is still top to bottom skiing!  I had one small area above Royal Flush where I had to take off the skis but other than that it was well covered.  The good news is that the temps are dropping right now and there were a lot of snow makers setting up guns getting ready to assault the hill.  The temps are supposed to stay cold for the next few days so by the weekend terrain should expand and coverage will be good.  I did see that there are now 2 umbrella bars set up now which look cool so there has been a lot of progress there.  I am still counting on the Salomon BBR demo to happen this Friday and Saturday based on the colder temp and snow making over the next few days, if there are any changes I will post them.  Also keep in mind the Basin Season Tune Demo on Sunday December 18, you can sign up in advance in the store, all we need is you boot and your season tune card.

The mountain opened at 8am this morning so we had a couple hours before the crowds showed up.  With the 11” new snow on Wednesday and snowmaking during the week additional terrain opened for the Thanksgiving holiday.  We can now ski top to bottom on Snowdon.  The quad and poma were turning so you could make a few quick runs on Upper Bunny before skiing to the bottom on Chute or Mouse Trap (if you wanted bumps).  I heard Downdraft headwall opened up as well but I didn’t check it out myself.  What I gorgeous day to be outside burning off all that Thanksgiving food from yesterday.  The forecast is calling for comfortable temperatures the next 2 days so make sure and get outside.
