THE PROCESS
Basin Ski Ride & Bike has been a staple of skiing in Killington, Vermont since 1958. In that time, our bootfitters have worked with thousands of happy customers to find the perfect boot for them. We believe that the key to making sure you get the perfect fit boot is making you feel comfortable and guiding you through every step of the process.
Our process can broken down into these steps:
- Background – From the second you enter our Boot Room you will see that our staff is asking questions about you. They will ask information on your skiing, lifestyle and other questions that may help guide us in finding you a perfect fit.
- Measuring – Our bootfitters will measure and assess the structure of your foot to best fit you in the perfect boot shell. They will discuss with you what they see in your foot and work with you to give you a better understanding of your
- Fitting – The bootfitter will make a few suggestions based on your foot size, width, and structure for you to try on. Together you will collaborate on what you think feels the best on your foot.
- Customizing – Every foot is different and our bootfitters will work with you to make sure that your ski boot is the most comfortable one you have ever had.
- Adjusting – We stand by our fits. As you try your boot we encourage you to come back in and get most adjustments to your fit free of charge.
HELPFUL TIPS
Bring or wear dry thin ski socks to your fitting.
Like trying on any footwear, you want to make sure that you are wearing socks that emulate how you will be when skiing. If you do not have ski socks don’t worry! We have a large selection you can purchase at a discount to boot fitting customers.
Plan your fitting to last at least a half hour
We want to make sure that your boot is fitted perfectly. Plan at least 30 minutes to an hour for a boot fitting.
Be Honest With Your Bootfitter
Many people are nervous our self conscious about people working with their feet. This is normal but our team has seen thousands of different skiiers and needs you to be honest with them through the whole process. Don’t worry we are here to help and are on your team!

WHO ARE CUSTOM BOOTS FOR?
Modern ski boots are pack full of technology and features but still are one size fits all solutions. Your foot is unique and may be pressing against your boot causing pain or pressure while walking or skiing. You should not be in pain while skiing. We use shell and liner modifications to create a perfect custom fit for your specific foot. We use a large selection of tools to heat and reshape the plastic of your boot to fit your foot’s shape exactly. All of the boots we offer, and many from other stores, can be modified by our team to make your next time out on the mountain more enjoyable.
COMMON ISSUES THAT MAY BE REMIDIED BY CUSTOM BOOTS
- Bunions or Tailor’s Bunion (sixth toe)
- Pronounced ankle or navicular bones
- Bone spurs or exostosis
- Hardware or tender spots from surgery
- Cold feet or Raynaud’s syndrome
- Foot is wider then the shell’s last or the forefoot of the boot
- Instep pressure
- Downsizing for the sake of performance
- Not enough foot support within the boot
THE CUSTOM INSOLE PROCESS
Every skier or snowboarder regardless of ability or experience level, can benefit from having a custom footbed. We have found that many of the discomforts skiers and boarders experience while in their boots is a result of an unsupported foot trying to constantly stay in balance while skiing or riding.
Custom footbeds are molded to your foot by taking an impression. The impression process has you stand on a specality machiene that creates a blank that is a perfect mold of your foot. We then take that impression and heat mold a footbed to match your foot perfectly.
We offer 6 different custom casting blanks and a variety of posting materials to address all types of foot issues. Not all foot biomechanics are identical therefore the support device needs to accommodate each foot type. We can cast semi-weighted or weighted. We also carry a variety of over the counter or accommodative footbeds for an alternative to custom support.
The process of molding a custom footbed typically takes 20 minutes of your time but the process of building your final product will take at least an hour. We encourage you to plan to pick up your footbed the day after taking the mold.
SNOWBOARD BOOT FITTING
Skiers aren’t the only ones who will benefit from a custom boot. Regardless of ability, a perfect fitting boot will allow you to have better control and comfort while riding. With the right boots, you will be riding comfortable for years to come!

ADVANCED ANALYSIS TECHNOLOGY TO ASSESS YOUR FOOT TYPE
We offer advanced analysis technology to assess your foot type, ability and biomechanics (foot stance, foot type, leg alignment) that allows us to accurately choose the correct level of fit, comfort and performance for your ski boots.
FOOT PRESSURE & BALANCE SCAN
“Stance Analysis” is a broad term to describe the process of determining what modifications to equipment are needed to balance a skier. The test:
– Examines posture and alignment; balance and co-ordination and your ability to react and adjust to changes in movement and terrain.
– Enables our technicians to assess the efficiency of your neuromuscular feedback before and after fitting ski boots and custom insoles.
SOLE PLANING 7 CANTOLOGY
Sole Planing a boot requires grinding the sole to change the angle in which the bottom of the boot sole meets the ski. We then add plates to the heel and toe and router the boot to meet ISO din standards. Bowlegged or severely knee knocked skiers could benefit from this process. Plating a boot for a leg length discrepancy also falls into this category. However not all boot soles are able to be ground.
In an instance your boot is not able to be planed, Cantology may be an option. Not all boots are able to work with this system. There are binding heel plates and shims that could be used to cant when traditional planing or cantology is not an option.
