Killington Bike Report – July 8

Killington Bike Report – July 8

Killington Bike Report , The mountain bike trails at Snowshed are fun to ride.  The Basin crew headed out on Wednesday to take a few runs and also to participate in the weekly bike bum race (new this summer).  Our team riders are Christine (my daughter), Dave, Chris, Lorraine and Michael.  I scored some big points for our team (even though I went really slow) because I am in the over 60 women’s category. The Adventure Center also at Snowshed has a beast mountain coaster, motorized mountain tours, roaring brook mining, scenic lift rides, skye ropes course, a terra-maze, skyebounce, a new skyejump, a new skyeline zip.  Plenty to keep you busy for awhile.  I am sure I didn’t list all of the fun things to do.  Also, Killington has a golf course and the K1 gondola is open for mountain biking and scenic rides.  The Ramshead lift will be spinning soon with more mountain bike trails.  The Basin is open 1 hour before Killington is open and 1 hour after Killington closes.  The bike shop (True Wheels) has new bikes for sale and NEW rentals for mountain and road, biking accessories, clothing, helmets and shoes.  Our bike service shop is here to make sure your bike is all set for an awesome ride.  Sorry no pictures.

Rainy Day Rumble

Rainy day rumble

Rainy Day Rumble is part of a Weekly Editorial Series for the Mountain Times Newspapers Switching Gears Section
Rainy Day Rumble

Rainy Day Rumble, Saturday rides for me always start out the same at Killington. I’ve got two hours to get as many runs in as possible before I have to head back to work. This past Saturday I arrived early, got the first chair and hoped that the impending rain storm would hold off. I got three runs in on Snowshed before the rain hit — I was clearly unprepared with my T-shirt and shorts combo. The rain came an hour earlier than expected and I wasn’t about to stop riding—I still had an hour!
So there I am riding up the Snowshed Quad in my T-shirt and shorts shivering my butt off and it hit me — I have it way better than the lift operators. They have to stand at the top and bottom of the lift all day, rain or shine, hauling heavy mountain bikes on and off the lift. Not only that but they have to listen to all the happy-faced people talk about how amazing the trails are. That must be painful, man, I could never be a liftie!
That day, in particular I really appreciated what Killington’s lift operators do. While I get to take lap after lap they have to stand there loading bikes in the rain. Granted they have the protection of the lift loading areas so they’re not getting completely pelted by rain but it still isn’t the most ideal situation. For that I’m thankful for the hard working people at Killington Resort. Even in the worst conditions they’re still smiling, handing out high fives and doing their jobs well.
This coming weekend we have another lift opening: K-1, which means off-the-peak mountain biking as well as operations seven days a week. I cannot wait to put in some serious hours on the downhill bike and cannot wait to see more smiling faces up there. Next time you’re up at the mountain taking runs, just take a moment and tell the lefties “thank you,” after all, if it weren’t for them you wouldn’t be able to enjoy lift-served mountain biking.

Killington Bike Park Trail Report for Thursday August 21, 2014

It’s a little rainy here on the mountain today with scattered thunderstorms continuing through the afternoon.  But hey, who doesn’t enjoy getting a little wet and muddy on the trails! Tomorrow we will see the rain begin to taper off by 10-11 AM giving way to upper 60’s temp’s and partly cloudy skies.  Today the K-1 Gondola will be running from 10-5 and the Snowshed Express will re-open this weekend.  Though wet trails can be fun, it can often times catch you off guard.  The rocks will be slippery and the mud will be gooey so consider pulling out the flat pedals for today’s riding.  As always trails that are known for holding water longer (Trails #3 and Lower #6 and #9) will be technical in today’s conditions.  But don’t let the rain stop you from riding.  Cables is going to be incredibly fun today and with smaller crowds of riders, the mountain should be relatively quiet.

  • Shop pick trail of the day is #18 Cables
  • Warnings: Trail #3, andlower #6 and #9 will be wet

Don’t forget to stop by True Wheels Bike Shop and rent one of our demo bikes.

Killington Bike Park Trail Report for August 4, 2014

Killington Bike Park Trail Report for August 4, 2014

It’s been a lovely weekend here in Killington, with sunny skies and temps staying in the 80’s.  For today’s bike report 33 of 34 trails are open with the K-1 Gondola running from 10-5.  The Snowshed express will be closed until next Saturday. Today’s weather calls for a 50% chance of scattered thunderstorms and a high temp of 82 degrees.  Tuesday’s weather calls for scattered thunderstorms after noon with temps in the mid 80’s.  This should set us up for a rather calm week of partly cloudy skies and temps staying in the upper 70’s range.  This does mean however, that as the rain tapers off the trails will dry out. The access road in particular has lots of loose gravel and can be particularly tricky in the turns.  But with the rain in the forecast, trails like lower #6 and #9 as well as trail #3 will become wet and slippery, and take the longest to dry out.  If you’re not feeling up to biking there is plenty of hiking trails on the mountain and most of them offer awesome views of the Green Mountains.

  • Shop pick trail of the day is #31 Stinky
  • Warnings: loose gravel

True Wheels Bike Report for August 2, 2014

True Wheels Bike Report for Saturday August 2, 2014

For the weekend, the K-1 Gondola and Snowshed Express will be running from 10-5 servicing Killington Bike Park.  33 of 34 trails are open but, trail crews are working extra hard to have trail #33 Yo Vinny open for the weekend. Killington has been receiving steady rain throughout the past two weeks, which has really helped in keeping the trails running smoothly.   There is some early morning showers expected for tomorrow morning, but that is expected to clear out by noon leading to partly cloudy skies and a high temp of 76 degrees. Sundays forecast calls for PM Thunderstorms and a high temp of 80 degrees.  Trail #3 is still very wet and slippery so use caution when riding that trail.  Don’t forget to stop by the Roaring Brook Bar, this afternoon for the K-1 Summer Concert Series going on from 3-6:30.

– Shop pick trail of the day is #26

– Warnings: muddy sections of trail

– Don’t forget to stop by True Wheels Bike Shop and rent one of our demo bikes.
