This just in from the folks at Killington:

Given the intensity of the rain we received last night and the forecast of significant rain starting tonight through the day on Saturday, our operational plans have changed since last night’s communication. This weekend (May 25th & May 26th), we will be offering FREE skiing and riding for all at Killington! Walking between snowfields will be required in several spots. Ma Nature is charging into summer and has other things in mind for us other than skiing, like golf and Mt Biking? To push any remaining snow to make connecting bridges would only hasten the melt process. Please note we are now going to operate Saturday and Sunday only, from 8-5, on the Superstar lift and trail.

We gave it our best shot to get into June, thus at the end of business on Sunday we are calling it a season. We thank all for your patronage and support this year. Don’t forget to buy your season passes for next year’s greatest value opportunity by June 13th! Remember only 130 days until we’re at it again for 2013-14!

The couple areas on the lower third of Super Star are not edge to edge but are well cover with plenty of snow around them to move to make for very good spring skiing over Memorial Day weekend.
I wish I could say that I got out there this past weekend, but I had other things going on and the only time I could break away was early Friday and I know it the snow was still set up, so I passed. I’m not done skiing, just missed this weekend and I plan on skiing this Friday and Sunday so I will have a better first hand report and pics. Anyway, for this week, I have plenty of friends that ventured out all three days and they sent me plenty of texts and pics on how it was.

At this point it’s Superstar top-to-botton and a groomed out Skyelark headwall back to Superstar. That route is nice as it gives you the option of going around the Supe headwall if you would like. Superstar hasn’t been groomed since Tuesday night, April 30, so the bumps grew with skier traffic last weekend than dissapated midweek with the warm temps. Make no mistake, the warm temps early last week took a toll on the snow pack, but temps stabilized as the week wore on and Killington sent out a groomer to pull the runout together back to the base of the chair

From what I was told, Friday afternoon after 2 was quite nice once things had softened up. Saturday was a day for the hardy. It was chilly, which kept things firm and there were periods of intermittent rain. It was definitely a skiable day, you just had to be there at the right time. Sunday sounds like it was the best day of the three. Skier traffic and warmer temps kept things soft. There wasn’t so much skier traffic that the moguls got huge and rutted, but enough to get them skied in and skiing well.

From the looks of the long range forecast, this weekend looks fantastic. Yes, I know that’s a long time away, but lets hope it stays true and we’re fortunate enough to have three days of sunny, warm weather. Fingers crossed and we’ll see you on Friday and every weekend after that until the snow runs out or June 2, whichever comes first !

Have a good week!

Wow! What a closing weekend of the regular season! Warm temps lots of happy, smiley faces and tons of snow.

I got up there with my son on Saturday morning to cheer on the Triathlon athletes and get him on snow again before the end of the year. After a shift change in parenting with my wife, I headed up to ski some bumps. On Saturday, I thought Lower Skyelark skied better than Superstar as it had better lines, rhythm and regularity throughout.

After a Sunday morning of playing at the Killington Elementary School’s playground and lunch at the Lookout with the fam, it was time to hit some more soft bumps. I thought Sunday afternoon was just phenomenal. I haven’t seen bumps like that on Superstar in a couple of years. by late afternoon on Sunday there were perfect left-right moguls everywhere down the steep pitch of lower Superstar. What a way to end the great regular season!

Come back and get some more as Killington re-opens this Fri-Sunday from 9-5 on Friday and 8-5 on Sat-Sun. Sure the warm weather did take a toll on the snowpack yesterday and I’m sure it will today, but there is still top-to- bottom and edge-to-edge snow coverage on Superstar. Lower Skyelark has a small breach in it where it was getting thin over the weekend as does Lower Bitter, but I’m sure a groomer will fix up Lower Bitter to make it continuous. I will have snow pics from Wednesday and Thursday posted here and on facebook for your viewing pleasure.

We’re open 10-6 Monday-Thursda, 8:30-6 Friday and 7:30-6 Saturday & Sunday this week. True Wheels Bike shop is fully open and operational out of the Basin. If you need something for your bike, stop by and see Matty or Jason.

See you on the hill on Friday!

Another spectacular spring day. Bluebird skies, a nice spring breeze and 66*at 12:30 at the base of Superstar.

Limited grooming last night because of the warmth, which meant only Upper Skyelark>Lower Bittersweet, Middle Supe and the connectors were groomed last night. From what I hear because it did get a tad chilly last night that the ungroomed wasn’t ready until about 11:30.

I got there just in time I suppose as I found the surface to be a buttery cream. It did get heavy and bump up as both skier traffic and temps rose throughout the day. In my opinion the only reason to ski this week was Lower Skyelark which is still just outstanding.

I’m sure that Upper Skyelark>Lower Bitter and a couple cat widths wide of Superstar will be groomed for Saturday and Sunday. Tomorrow is the Killington Trilathlon which kicks off at 10. Good luck competitors, I will be up there as a spectator cheering you on while waiting for Lower Supe to bump up!

And the gorgeous days just keep stacking up. Sun and clouds, calm winds and 78* at 1:30 at the base of Superstar

Today was the warmest day of the year. This resulted in limited grooming of only Upper Skyelark>Lower Bitter, the High Road connector and middle Supe. Anything that was groomed was pretty heavy. The ungroomed stayed okay as it didn’t turn to total mush.

For me today, I skied the mogul course on Supe headwall to Skyelark to the best moguls of the season on Lower Skyelark. It was easier to get down middle Skyelark than middle Superstar as middle Supe was mushy. I skied that route six times and chickened out on the mogul course on SS headwall my last run and went around to ski Skyelark TTB.

There will be plenty of sun, but temps are forecasted to cool off some 10* the rest of the week bringing some life back to the snow surface. I hope that some of you get a chance to get up here and experience this great spring season.

Till tomorrow!

What a fantastic Spring Day. Sunny, calm winds and 70* at 1:00. Basically, more of the same.

May 1. Not many eastern resorts can say that they operate daily into May, but Killington can. Today was the return of the May 1 fun slalom and with that it, the place was somewhat crowded. Not weekend crowded, but there definitely was some people around.

As usual this time of year, the groomers were soft in the morning and became heavier and mogulier as the temps rose and skier traffic increased as the day wore on.

In my opinion, the best reason to ski right now is Lower Skyelark which has the best moguls I have seen this year. The other routes are fun, but the snow gets heavy by late morning- early afternoon. Don’t get me wrong, this is fun, but to me it gets tiresome. I cant comment on Upper or Lower Bitter as I didn’t head there today.

Mostly sunny, calm wind and 60* at the base of Superstar at 12:15 for the last day of April.

Great day today. Superstar skied well as it wasn’t too mushy to start, but became heavier with skier traffic and as the temps rose. Upper Bittersweet was more fun that yesterday. It wasn’t groomed last night and as a result held ample corn snow. The main story today was how good the moguls were on Lower Skyelark. Perfect late season Lower Skyelark – small, rounded, natural moguls that went the whole distance of the trail. Best part about it is that the trail still has a edge to edge coverage. Usually by time L. Skyelark gets good, the mogul lines start to rot out. Not this year.

Tomorrow is the triumph return of the May 1st Fun Slalom which is FREE for the first 300 participants. All “competitors” receive a free Killington lift ticket valid until Sun Dec 15, 2013.

Have fun out there!

Hard to believe that it’s April 29 with all that snow still around. Overcast skies, slight breeze and 56* at 2:15pm at the base of Superstar.

Superstar was groomed last night which made for some really soft turns today. The headwall got a bit moguly, but the middle and lower stayed mainly flat and smooth. If you have skis 100mm or wider under foot, today was the day to use them to tackle the soft snow. I enjoyed skiing Superstar to the lower mogul course which skied very nice. In fact, I thought today skied better than this weekend as the snow was a tad “firmer”. It wasn’t as soft or mushy and moguly as it was the last two days.

I took a run down Bittersweet as a warm up to check it out. Upper Bittersweet was fun if your up for an adventure. It still has continuous snow coverage, but I cant imagine it will last much longer. Skyelark Upper and Lower still have edge to edge coverage as does Lower Bitter.

On a personal note, today was my 100th day of the season. If all goes right with the weather, it looks like there is 19 more days of lift served this season. I hope to get a few more before it’s a wrap!
